A friend of mine who read The Possessor, which is set in the
1950’s, asked me if I didn’t miss the good old days when kids were polite and
everyone wasn’t on welfare. I told him no because if it weren’t for modern
medicine, I’d be dead. Some like to call
the 1950’s a time of innocence, but I think of it as a time of ignorance. We
were insulated from the world. I may write about the good old days of my childhood, but the real good old days are today. To say you wish you could go back is
saying you want to stop the world and get off. I want to ride this baby for as long as I’m
healthy. I want to look to tomorrow because yesterday is nothing more than a fond memory.
