The Possessor

The manuscript to The Possessor has been proofread, changes made, and I am now in the process of the final reading. It has been a long, hard six months but I am really proud of this story. At first I thought it would be a young adult book but as my readers get back with me I realize it is a book for all ages. What follows is an outline of the book.

The Possessor is a powerful and suspenseful coming of age story that takes place in 1954. It evolves around Mac, a young fourteen-year-old who is sent to live with his Aunt Holly and Uncle John in Bolivar, Missouri. His father has had a possible heart attack. While there, he meets a young fifteen-year-old girl named Dory Grace. He is quite enamored by this young girl because she is so different from him or anyone else he has ever met. Where Mac is shy and reserved, Dory can be abrupt and say anything that is on her mind. In many ways, she dresses and acts like a misfit that doesn't belong but Mac realizes it hides the young girl inside that want to be free to be herself.  She lives with a stepmother and stepbrother Tony. Tony is asexual, anti-social, and very angry. Mac's first meeting with Dory ends up with Tony beating up Mac. Although Mac realizes he should not see Dory, Mac can't resist. She has a "magic" that is tantalizing as well as refreshing. Tony watches Dory like a hawk because he doesn't want her to see other people, much less like someone else. In Tony's depraved mind, Dory belongs to him-his possession. Dory has become his social world, although it is a twisted, one-sided relationship. As Dory and Mac are drawn closer together, Tony is determined to keep them apart. Mac is not afraid of Tony until his Uncle John is sent on a business trip and only Aunt Holly stands between Tony and him.  The suspense grows throughout the book until Tony and Mac finally meet in a climatic ending.
